Lisa, a transgender teen at St Valentine’s High, develops feelings for rugby captain Mose while dealing with school prejudices and fighting for acceptance.

The Kiwi high school experience is unforgiving and awkward, and when gender identity and culture are thrown into the mix, things can get even more complicated.

In Whakaata Māori’s Inky Pinky Ponky, a teenage fakaleitī is forced to fight through bigotry as she prepares for her first day at St Valentine’s High School – her third school transfer following years of bullying.

For Lisa (Amanaki Prescott-Faletau, who originally co-wrote the show alongside Leki Jackson-Burke as a stage play), a tall Tongan trans-girl with persistent sass, the high school experience is vastly different to the same John Hughes-style stories we’ve seen repeated a million times before.

She has to contend with the politics of bathroom use – enter the boy’s bathroom where she doesn’t feel like she belongs, or the girls where she’ll have to face bullies – then introduce herself to the class as Lisa after her deadname, Lewis, is called on the classroom role. Her gang of classmates – Sia, Brittany, Leo, Demetrius, and the Captain of the First XV, Moses – are quick to tease the outsider in their midst. Then, things take a turn when the boys dare Moses into taking Lisa to their school ball.
